  • System Closure or Abandonment

    In accordance with the Arizona Administrative Code's Arizona State Aquifer Protection Permit (APP) Rules , section R18-9-A309.D, a person who permanently discontinues the use of an onsite wastewater treatment facility (or cesspool) is required to notify Pima County using the Pima County Land Permitting Customer Portal (select the box that says Commercial Site Development, Subdivisions, Addressing, Septic Transfers & Related Instruments). Please complete and attach the Closure Notification (below) when you create the application via the portal.

    Closure Notification of an Onsite Wastewater Treatment Facility (Septic System or Cesspool)

    The person must:
    • Remove all sewage from the facility and dispose of the sewage in a lawful manner;
    • Disconnect and remove electrical and mechanical components;
    • Remove or collapse the top of any tank or containment structure; and
    • Cut and plug both ends of the abandoned sewer drain pipe between the building and the onsite wastewater treatment facility.
