Precipitation and Streamflow Data

Automated Local Evaluation in Real Time (ALERT)

The District operates and maintains a network of real-time sensors used to collect hydrometeorological data.  This network provides information to county personnel and other agencies about precipitation, stormwater runoff, and weather conditions affecting our regional watersheds.

Rain gageUsing radio telemetry, sensors report data in the National Weather Service Automated Local Evaluation in Real Time (ALERT) format.  This type of network is commonly referred to as an ALERT system.

ALERT system sensors are event driven and transmit data in real-time to base station computers at the District's office and the Tucson National Weather Service office. Event driven real-time transmission, means that transmission of data occurs immediately as data is collected at field sites.

Data collected by the ALERT system is used by the National Weather Service to assist in issuing flood watches and warnings and to ground-truth radar determined rainfall estimates.

Stream gage

The District has upgraded its ALERT system software and has launched a new publically accessible web page for displaying real- or near real-time hydro-meteorological data for Southeastern Arizona.  Precipitation, stream flow and other weather related information produced by District ALERT stations, as well as data generated by other agencies monitoring equipment is now just a few clicks away.

The new website presents our ALERT data more reliably and offers much more information to assist local communities, public safety agencies, researchers and the general public about current weather conditions. The website provides real-time data from the District’s 100+ precipitation, streamflow and weather monitoring stations.  In addition the website can display weather and streamflow data from over 40 additional gaging sites run by partner agencies including National Weather Service, U.S. Geological Survey, Arizona Game and Fish, and Pinal, Cochise and Santa Cruz Counties.   The list of available cooperator sites continues to expand and sites will be added as they become available.

The website’s main feature is a map display containing locations of gaging sites along with a real-time display of the data generated at that site.  The map display is built on a Google Maps structure which provides an easy to navigate, up-to-date map that can be viewed in either street- or terrain-view, and can display satellite imagery.  Additionally, current radar images, both static and animations, can be displayed on the map along with National Weather Service storm warnings which appear on the map as a box outlining the affected area(s).

Our new system has two versions, one for display on desktops/laptops which currently runs better on Google Chrome than on Internet Explorer, and another for mobile and small screen devices.   The mobile device version is a slightly simplified version that provides most of the functionality of the full version.  To access either of these two new map displays click on the links below.

About ALERT System Sensor Data

ALERT sensors are programmed to report in every 12 hours regardless if a change has occurred.  Data is sent to the base station using radio telemetry.

Precipitation

All precipitation gages measure rainfall depth in 1mm increments.  The base station computer which collects and reports the data uses the relation 1 mm=0.03937 inches to convert millimeters to inches.  Reported values are in inches.  Gages used are tipping buckets and are programmed to report each tip.

Streamflow

Stream gages measurements are provided in cubic feet per second (cfs) which is determined based upon depth of flow.  Hydraulic computer models are used to calculate discharge in cfs based upon depth of flow above the sensor.   Channel cross-sections and the sensors are surveyed to a local datum.

At most stream gage sites the channels have sand beds that can aggrade and/or degrade over time depending on how much deposition or scour has taken place in any particular flow event.

Stream gage sensors are interrogated every 5 minutes and programmed to report on a change of 0.2 feet or 2.4 inches.

Data Errors

Automatic rain gages are set to tip (measure) at 1mm increments.  If precipitation less that 1mm falls into the gage, evaporation may dry the tipping bucket between storms, causing a loss in measurement.

Wind can reduce precipitation catchment by creating turbulence around a rain gage and catchment error increases as wind velocity increases.  A common observation during thunderstorms is that the rain appeared to be blowing sideways.  This can reduce the amount of precipitation that falls into a gage.

Other errors may be introduced by the effects of vandalism, gage height, calibration errors, blockages caused by bugs, and the physical environment (trees and buildings) near the gage.

MyAlerts Flood Alert Messaging

The Pima County Office of Emergency Management has made it possible through a system called MyAlerts for the Regional Flood Control District to provide near-real-time flood alerts to Pima County residents within certain watersheds. The MyAlerts Flood Alert Messaging webpage provides information about MyAlerts and information specific to the covered watersheds.
