Under State of Arizona enabling legislation (Title 48 of ARS), flood control districts are designated as special taxing districts and given the authority to levy secondary property tax on parcels within their jurisdiction.
The District's flood control levy for FY 14/15 is set at 30 cents per $100 assessed valuation. At this levy rate, a typical property with an assessed valuation of $152,511 could expect to pay an annual flood control tax of approximately $45.
Identifying cost-effective and practical solutions to regional flood control needs will continue to be a major theme for the District in coming years. In addition to its tax levy revenues, enabling legislation also granted the Districts bonding authority among other powers and responsibilities.
Pima County Regional Flood Control District uses bond monies in conjunction with state and federal funding sources to build flood control facilities and to acquire floodprone land. Over the years, the District has been successful in leveraging state and federal matching funds to implement numerous flood control improvements throughout the community.
In the recent May 18, 2004 bond election, county voters approved $46 million dollars in flood control bond sales for the purpose of constructing new flood and river park facilities.
