The Ahwahnee Awards program was initiated by the Local Government Commission in 1994 to recognize projects, plans and programs that help create more livable, pedestrian-and transit-friendly communities in one of the 14 western states. The awards are named in honor of the Ahwahnee Principles developed in 1991 by leading architects and urban designers and first presented at a conference at the Ahwahnee Hotel in Yosemite National Park.
The 2001-02 awards program was cosponsored by the American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC), and the California Chapter of the American Planning Association (CCAPA).
