    Human Respiratory System
May 18, 2015 - Hot and stagnant summer air provides the perfect conditions for the creation of an air pollutant called ground-level ozone. Miles above us in the naturally occurring layer, ozone acts as a protective shield against damaging solar radiation. But at ground level, ozone irritates respiratory system tissue and can damage the lining of the lungs, causing a reaction similar to sunburn. Ozone aggravates asthma, emphysema and other respiratory diseases.

Nov 19, 2014 - If cleaning up around the house for holiday guests involves removing fallen leaves on the porch or pathways in the yard, consider picking up a broom or rake instead of a gas-powered leaf blower. The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality’s Clean Air Program provides information about how our daily choices affect the air we breathe.
    Fireplace
Nov 18, 2014 - Chilly temperatures are here and some people will be turning to wood burning to add warmth to their homes. According to the EPA, there are approximately 29 million wood-burning fireplaces or stoves in the United States. These and other wood-burning appliances (such as chimineas) contribute to wintertime particle pollution and the brown haze we sometimes see in eastern Pima County. By choosing not to use wood-burning appliances, if you have other heating options, or by burning smarter, we can help keep the air healthier to breathe.
    Halloween Pumpkins
Oct 31, 2014 - Dark nights, stop-and-go vehicles, zombies and skeletons chasing after treats across the streets could frighten any driver. Driving around in neighborhoods on Halloween can be scary, but not as scary as the polluted air that idling vehicles cause. Don’t let your car idle while your children trick or treat -- park and walk instead.
    Bike Wheel
Oct 09, 2014 - Pima County Clean Air Program is supporting a new service to encourage bicycling instead of driving to local community events. Living Streets Alliance (LSA) is launching their Bike Valet Event Parking Program this weekend at the Tucson Meet Yourself Festival. The program will continue throughout the year at popular community events to provide convenient and secure bike parking for those who want to skip that vehicle trip and reap all the benefits of bicycling.
    Children Walking to School
Oct 07, 2014 - Schools in the Tucson metropolitan area are joining people all over the world in celebration of International Walk and Bike to School Day. Join the fun for a great way to combine kid time with a little exercise and enjoyment of our delightful autumn weather. Due to fall breaks, schools throughout Pima County can participate on either Wednesday, October 8th or Wednesday, October 15th.

Sep 17, 2014 - Give your car a staycation for one day and you could win a $100 gift card or a Kindle e-reader. Pima County Department of Environmental Quality (PDEQ) and Pima Association of Governments (PAG), the region’s metropolitan planning organization, join the rest of the world in encouraging drivers to treat themselves to a Car-Free Day on Monday, September 22.
    Children Walking to School
Sep 02, 2014 - The Pima County Department of Transportation and Department of Environmental Quality are working together to encourage children, parents and guardians to take part in International Walk and Bike to School Day on Wednesday, October 8th or 15th, 2014, depending on school schedule. Walking, bicycling, and using other active modes of transportation improves health through physical activity, helps reduce obesity, reduces traffic congestion, and provides family members with an opportunity to spend quality time with each other and to connect with neighbors.

Aug 11, 2014 - Looking for a place to properly dispose of your household hazardous waste? Improper disposal of such wastes can include pouring them down the drain, on the ground or into storm drains. The dangers of such disposal methods might not be immediately obvious, but improper disposal can pollute the environment and pose a threat to human health. The majority of the Pima County-owned landfills and transfer stations continue to accept used antifreeze, batteries, oil, and paint (ABOP) for recycling or proper disposal from residential customers at no charge.
    Environmental Quality
Jul 25, 2014 - The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality is issuing an air quality advisory due to significantly elevated hourly levels of particulate matter.

    4th of July Fireworks
Jun 27, 2014 - According to the Hearth, Patio & Barbeque Association, the most popular holiday for barbecuing in the United States is July 4th. This year, if charcoal is your choice of fuel, try barbecuing without lighter fluid. It will help make our air healthier to breathe.
    Cattle Feeding on Illegal Dump
Jun 26, 2014 - Spring cleaning, summer cleaning – we do it all year long and if we hire someone to take our trash to the landfill, how do we know it actually got there? The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality (PDEQ) investigates hundreds of illegal dumpsites each year and often the trash is from people like you and me who hired someone to dispose of it for us. They took payment and instead of heading for the landfill, they took a different turn and your items ended up dumped in the desert.
    Rainbow After a Rain
Jun 23, 2014 - The monsoon is coming and there are many actions we can take to keep the water clean for future generations. We can reduce the amount of pollution in the stormwater by reducing litter; hiring reliable solid waste haulers; replacing brake pads that have high copper content; reducing the use of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers; and cleaning up after our animals.

Jun 20, 2014 - Tired of the winds kicking up dust pollution? Unfortunately, when the winds take a rest, our levels of another harmful air pollutant will be on the rise. The hot and stagnant air in June provides the perfect conditions for the creation of a dangerous air pollutant called ozone.
American Public Transporation Association Dump the Pump Day
Jun 17, 2014 - Automobile emissions and fumes from the gasoline that fuels them are a major cause of air pollution in Pima County. To fight air pollution and save money, the Pima County Department of Environmental Quality Clean Air Program encourages the community to try transit on Thursday, June 19, for the 9th Annual National Dump the Pump Day.

    Blue Sky with Clouds
Apr 24, 2014 - It is vital to our lives and yet how often do we think about the air we breathe? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is holding the annual “Air Quality Awareness Week” on April 28-May 2, 2014, to highlight air quality issues in our country. Pima County Department of Environmental Quality’s Clean Air Program carries on the spirit of Air Quality Awareness Week all year by raising community awareness of ways we can all help keep our air healthy to breathe.

    Water in the Desert
Mar 19, 2014 - In honor of World Water Day on March 22, Pima County is encouraging everyone to keep trash out of the desert. Rain water picks up contaminants and trash as it flows across yards and streets and eventually ends up in our washes and groundwater. The trash can release hazardous components into the stormwater and soil, or clog the drains and culverts that protect us from flooding. There are multiple ways to reduce stormwater pollution – from a simple personal commitment to pick up at least one piece of litter a day to joining in community clean-ups organized by your neighbors or local organizations.
