County's 22nd GIS Fair celebrates Sonoran Desert!

More than 200 attendees enjoyed this year’s 22nd Annual GIS Fair Nov. 8, hosted by Pima County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) group.

Thanks to the generosity of Westland Resources and Eagle View, we were able to provide everyone with lunch and coffee as they perused the
20 booths and attended presentations. Competition to identify Sonoran desert aerial photos was fierce, and we think it was because of our Prizes: Native Sonoran Desert plants generously donated by the Pima County Natural Resources Parks and Recreation Native Plant Nursery.

Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation won the Best Booth Award for the third year in a row! Their booth demonstrated a prototype of the “Flow Control Dashboard.” There are about 30 places In the RWRD sewer conveyance system where flows may direct in two or more directions. That diversion might need for system repairs, maintenance, to even out flow, or for other reasons.

Diversions made by using redwood weirs or gates, which may have their settings adjusted; these are called Flow Control Objects (FCOs). The purpose of the Flow Control Dashboard is to allow RWRD senior management and conveyance staff to quickly see the current status of the GCO’s setting and their effect on effluent flow at the diversion structure. Effluent flow effects based on calculations made by ICM, RWRD’s hydraulic model.

Thanks to all who attended or hosted a booth – you ae what make our GIS community so special. A huge thanks to everyone who sponsored food or donated prizes, the students and Tucson Water volunteers who helped run the fair, and the multi-jurisdictional GIS Fair Committee for putting together another great event. We look forward to seeing you at the next GIS Fair in 2020!
