The Pima County Bicycle and Pedestrian Program is asking schools to register soon for its annual Walk ‘n’ Roll to School Day Friday, April 7. Participating schools will receive a safety prize for each student actively commuting to school; those registering by March 15 will receive a kick scooter while supplies last.

Thousands of families annually take part in the event by walking, riding bikes, skating, or scooting to school. The event is held each spring to encourage active ways for children to get to school and to improve air quality around schools and in neighborhoods.

Schools that would like to participate on a different day in April should contact the Bicycle and Pedestrian Program at 520-724-BIKE or by emailing Olga Valenzuela-Ochoa.

More than 50 local schools are expected to participate in Walk ‘n’ Roll to School Day. Many of these schools receive special bike and pedestrian safety training from the Bicycle and Pedestrian Program, an initiative that works to enhance child traffic safety. The Pima County Department of Environmental Quality is also assisting with the event.

Walking, bicycling, and using other active modes of transportation improves health through physical activity, reduces traffic congestion and provides family members with an opportunity to spend quality time with each other and to connect with their neighbors.
