Youth employment The Pima County Workforce Investment Board will name its Employer and Youth of the Year winners at its annual meeting, 8 a.m., Dec. 12, at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites, 4550 S. Palo Verde Road.

The board also will present its annual report and host a panel on science, technology, engineering and math education at the meeting. 

The Workforce Investment Board is made up of leaders from local businesses, nonprofits and educational institutions who are appointed by the Pima County Board of Supervisors and provide recommendations on local workforce policy and oversight of the Pima County OneStop Career Center.

The nominees for the Employer of the Year are: Walgreen’s, the Reid Park Zoo and Southern Arizona Manufacturing Partners. 
Nominees for Youth of the Year are: Connie Tran, Nahrin Jabro, Geraldine Guillen, Marissa Amezeua, Amber Warne and Christina Genduso.

The employer award recognizes local employers for having a history with youth placements, significant impacts and outcomes as a result of hiring youth, and for being an advocate for youth career and workforce development.

The youth award recognizes youth who have excellent leadership skills, the ability to work well with others, demonstrated significant impacts or outcomes, and proven to be reliable.

DaNel Hogan, Director of the STEMAZing Project, Office of the Pima County School Superintendent, will moderate the STEM education panel. Panel members are: 
  • Sharon O’Neal, Software Engineering Director, Raytheon Company
  • Jennifer Sedler, STEM Outreach and Equity, Women in Science and Engineering, UA Honors College Class of 2015
  • Dr. Julia Olsen, Director of Teachers in Industry, University of Arizona
  • Paulina Acevedo, XIV Test Project Manager, IBM Systems and Technology Group
