Canada del Oro Linear Park-Thornydale to Magee

Overview

The May 2004 General Bond Election provided $5 million for use on linear parks on the Canada Del Oro (CDO) Wash between Thornydale Road and the north end of Omni/Tucson National Golf Course. Pima County Regional Flood Control District (District) completed the first phase of this project north of Magee Road in February 2009. The second phase of the project will extend the linear park on the eastside of the CDO between Thornydale Road to Magee Road.

Phase 2 of the linear park will consist of approximately 1.75 miles of paved shared-use pathway on top of the existing soil cement bank protection. Underpass ramps at Magee Road and Ina Road, and pedestrian bridges or culvert will be provided at major drainage crossings to allow continuous access from Thornydale Road to the north end of the Omni/Tucson National Golf Course on the east bank. Landscape improvements will be provided next to pathway where adequate right-of-way exists, preserving and enhancing the existing native vegetation on top of the bank. The project will include two staging areas, one near the Shannon Road and Magee Road intersection and the other east of the Thornydale Road Bridge.

Psomas was selected by the District to design the pathways, underpass ramps, and bridge/culverts. McGann and Associates provided the master plan, and design the landscape features, plants and irrigation system. Structural Grace designed the pedestrian bridge.

Construction of Phase 2 began May 13, 2010 and is expected to last nine months, with the new linear park opening in January 2011. Norquay Construction was awarded the construction contract for $1,734,033.46.
