  • DOT-57 Old Spanish Trail and Cactus Forest Drive Intersection

    Cactus Forest Road is the entrance to Saguaro National Park (East). A left turn lane, from Old Spanish Trail onto Cactus Forest Road, was added to improve safety.

    The project’s need and purpose was to improve traffic operations and safety by separating turning vehicles from vehicles continuing through the intersection.

    The finished roadway width includes 12’ wide lanes on Old Spanish Trail and a 12’ wide left turn lane. 

    Old Spanish Trail is a heavily used recreational route and Saguaro National Park East is a popular destination for bicycle enthuasiasts. 

    The project included reconstruction of the existing 6’ wide bike lanes / shoulders on both sides of Old Spanish Trail and reconstruction of a pedestrain path connecting to an existing pathway into the Park.      

    PCDOT Maintaince and Operations included the left turn lane project as part of a pavement rehabilitation project on Old Spanish Trail from Melpomene Way to Escalante Rd.  

    The federal funding authorized was not used for construction because the project was included with the pavement rehabilitation project.
