A pedestrian hybrid beacon, known as a HAWK (High Intensity Activated Crosswalk), was installed at an existing crosswalk on Mary Ann Cleveland Way, to serve Cienega High School. In response to a citizen’s request, PCDOT Traffic Engineering Section studied the need for a crosswalk at the intersection of Mary Ann Cleveland Way and Kush Canyon Lane, which is a subdivision entrance across Mary Ann Cleveland Way from Cienega High School.

As a result of the study, it was determined the crosswalk and pedestrian signal should be installed as well as curb ramps and 100 feet of sidewalk extension to connect to the existing school sidewalk. The HAWK enhances visibility of the crosswalk and provides a signalized crossing for improved pedestrian safety. The crossing signal is activated by the pedestrian, and provides advanced notice to the approaching motorists that a pedestrian is present and a red light signal to stop is present at the HAWK.
