The Tangerine Closure project placed a final cap consisting of three feet of final cover soil on the former Tangerine Landfill.  The landfill operated from 1984 through 2013. Landfill closure is required after the permitted landfill volume was reached under the landfill operation permit approved by the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.

This project required the importation of more than 330,000 cubic yards of soil delivered in 25,000 dump truck loads. After the soil was delivered, it was spread and compacted in 6-inch lifts to a total depth of three feet over the entire landfill surface of about 56 acres.

Additional work included the construction of storm water control features to shed rainfall from the landfill surface without causing erosion, including diversion dikes, mid-slope interception berms and armored down chutes to deliver water from the top surface to retention basins below. Other work included extension of a leachate riser and hydro-mulch seeding of the entire landfill surface.
