Tucson SaguarosThe Tucson Saguaros are the 2016 Pecos League champions, thanks to a dramatic, come-from-behind win Aug. 11 over the Trinidad Triggers at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium, 2500 E. Ajo Way.

The Saguaros were down 4-1 in the bottom of the ninth before tying the game, then winning 5-4 on a wild pitch by Triggers reliever, Christian Schneider.

In the process of winning the championship, Tucson laid claim to the best-ever Pecos League team, setting a new record for the most total wins in a season (55, including the playoffs) and then tied the record for the fewest losses in a season (15). Tucson Saguaros ranked first place in the Southern Division standings the entire season.

The Pecos League is an independent professional baseball league with teams in New Mexico, Kansas, West Texas, Southern Colorado, and just recently also Arizona. The Tucson Saguaros joined the League this year and selected Kino Sports Complex as its home field.

Tucson Saguaros will return to Kino Sports Complex for their second season in 2017. Their first home game is scheduled for May 18, 2017. Buy your tickets now at the Tucson Saguaros website.

Later this year, the team will also host a three-day camp for aspiring players who want to join the team. The free agent camp will take place Dec. 16-18 at Kino Sports Complex. There’s a $300 fee to participate. The camp will include drills, workouts and participation in a couple of games that weekend. The series was scheduled to get underway Aug. 9, but got postponed due to inclement weather conditions.  The Saguaros played the Trinidad Triggers once before during regular season play and beat the team 4-0. Since then, however, both teams have added new players to their roster.

In its first year with the Pecos League, the Tucson Saguaros worked hard to build its reputation within the league and also among the local Tucson community. The final game drew a record-crowd of over 600 attendees.

“We’re pleased to see that our newest local baseball team has performed so well and that they’re beginning to win over the local community,” said Reenie Ochoa, Kino Sports Complex director. “These young ballplayers truly play for the love of the game and leave it all out on the field each time. It’s been fun watching them play and we look forward to having them again next year.”
