archaeological toursThe Tucson Historic Preservation Foundation (THPF) will recognize Pima County’s Cultural Resources Program, Archaeology Southwest, SWCA, Inc. and Innovative Excavating Inc. for their impressive archaeological finding of 3,000-year-old human footprints at a construction site on Sunset Road earlier this year.

The recognition will take place at an awards ceremony open to the public on Saturday, May 21 from 9:30 a.m. to noon at the Scottish Rite Cathedral, 160 S. Scott Ave. During the ceremony, THPF will honor 13 individuals or organizations that have made a significant contribution to historic preservation in Tucson and Pima County. The honorees include Pima County and the archaeological team involved with the human footprints discovery at Sunset Road. THPF will honor their public outreach efforts.

Pima County’s Cultural Resources and Historic Preservation Division manages the county’s preservation efforts, including all archaeological investigations of construction projects, a requirement for all county projects. Archaeologists uncovered the 3,000-year-old human footprints while conducting one of these routine investigations. They discovered the footprints in an agricultural field and canal system along the eastern bank of the Santa Cruz River.

The unearthing drew media attention from local, national, and also international news outlets and historic preservation organizations. In addition, Pima County’s Cultural Resources staff collaborated with the archeological team to conduct several public tours to showcase the discoveries with the community. Between January and February, these free tours drew over 4,000 people to the construction site.

The finding occurred during pre-construction work for a Pima County Transportation and Regional Transportation Authority road project to construct a new bridge at Sunset Road connecting Silverbell Road to I-10.
