Weldon (Jim) Brewer, president of Green Valley’s BAJA Sporting Club, is the first recipient of the Chuck Catino Community Leadership Award, named for the longtime volunteer and founder of the Born Again Jocks Association (BAJA) Club and the driver behind Canoa Preserve Park, where the softball complex is named in his honor.

Brewer is retired from a career in the U.S. Marine Corps and works closely with Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation to develop Canoa Preserve Park, the only public park in Green Valley.

“This award originated with the Parks/Rec Commissioners shortly after Chuck Catino’s passing as a way to honor him,” said District 4 Supervisor Ray Carroll, whose district includes Green Valley.  “Chuck was a friend and an amazing advocate for Green Valley, whose absence is felt by the community every day. If there were a man to carry on his legacy, it would be Jim Brewer.”

Jim BrewerBrewer is the current president of the BAJA Club, a non-profit sports and civic organization dedicated to furthering the recreational assets of the community as well as supporting other social and charitable community organizations. The organizations supported by BAJA include the Green Valley Council, the Green Valley and Amado Food Banks, The Green Valley/Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce, Green Valley Recreation, the Anza Trail Coalition, Friends of Canoa Ranch, and Pima County NRPR.

“Jim’s positive attitude, endless energy, and ability to think “outside the box” are driving forces in achieving collaboration with local community entities in pursuing fundraising opportunities to assist Pima County NRPR in developing Canoa Park,” wrote Robert Hoyler, a member of the BAJA Board of Directors, in Brewer’s nomination letter.

Supervisor Carroll will present Brewer with the award at the March 15 Board of Supervisors meeting.
