Pima County officials will celebrate the completion of one of the newest sections of The Loop on Saturday, March 12, 9-11 a.m., along the Santa Cruz River at Drexel Road.

Loop mapDistrict 5 Supervisor Richard Elías, County Administrator Chuck Huckelberry, Sheriff Chris Nanos, Ward 1 Council Member Regina Romero, and Regional Flood Control District Chief Engineer Suzanne Shields will speak at the event. The first 100 children to arrive will receive free bicycle helmets and bicycle bells at the event. Bicycle safety information, Loop maps, and Neighborhood Watch information will also be available.

The $1.1 million bond-funded project filled a missing piece of the 100-plus-mile shared-use path by adding a segment along the west bank of the Santa Cruz River from Valencia Road north to Drexel Road. Prior to this improvement, The Loop path ended at Drexel Road, which meant there was no connection for users coming from Valencia Road, a major arterial road. This improvement now connects The Loop’s northernmost segments all the way down to Valencia Road.

The 16-foot-wide asphalt pathway extends approximately 5,900 lineal feet and includes an adjacent decomposed granite ‘soft’ path along much of the way. The project also added corrugated metal pipes and a box culvert for path crossings over drainage ways.

In addition, an off-street paved parking area was added along the path, providing access for Loop users and minimizing parking in residential areas. It also provides a staging area for special events along The Loop, such as El Tour de Tucson

Sandi Garrick is the project manager for completion of this section of The Loop. Kimley-Horn & Associates, Inc. served as design consultant, and Granite Construction was the general contractor.
