The Pima County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 19 unanimously approved to extend the operating agreement with Rillito Racing Inc., a subsidiary of Rillito Park Foundation, at Rillito Regional Park through June 30, 2017, ensuring the park’s use for activities ranging from soccer games to professional horse racing to community events such as the Celtic festival.

Rillito Regional Park aerial viewThe multipurpose, regional park features 11 sport fields, historic horseracing facilities, and a track that draws concerts, community events and more. It also is adjacent to a thriving weekly farmer’s market located along The Loop, Pima County’s linear park that features100-plus miles of shared-use for walkers, runners, cyclists and roller-bladers.

Recent renovations to Rillito Park added three new athletic fields, lighting to another three fields, and new restrooms and parking. Rillito now has 11 full athletic fields, nine of which are lighted. That makes it the largest regional soccer complex in Pima County. Construction was funded with 2004 General Obligation bonds.

Figures from 2015 show that soccer teams are the predominant users of Rillito Park with 84 percent availability of the athletic fields for sports use. The remainder of the use is divided between horseracing (6 percent) and special events (10 percent).

In approving the agreement, the Board clarified that during the week -- Monday through Friday -- the infield recreational facilities that lie inside the perimeter of the racing track will be controlled by Pima County Natural Resources, Parks and Recreation. Provided there is no prescheduled soccer use of those fields, Rillito Racing may use the track facilities.

The 2016 “Winter Race Meet” runs weekends beginning Saturday, Feb.13, and continuing through Sunday, March 20.  More information on the entire race meet, including days and hours of operations, can be found on rillitoracetrack.com.
