Pima County’s Regional Optimization Master Plan (ROMP) is a finalist in Arizona Forward’s 35th Annual Environmental Excellence Awards program. Arizona Forward will host a gala event on Sept. 12 in Phoenix to honor candidates.

ROMP is a finalist in the Buildings and Structures of the Industrial and Public Works category and will earn either an Award of Merit or the coveted first-place Crescordia Award at the event.  The Phoenix Business Journal will highlight the awards and ROMP in its Aug. 21 issue.

The $605 million ROMP improved the quality of effluent discharged into the Santa Cruz River by decreasing amounts of nitrogen and ammonia as mandated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency through the Clean Water Act. Pima County’s Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) completed this project, which is also the County’s largest public works undertaking in history, months ahead of schedule with cost savings of about $114 million.

“With this recent upgrade, Tres Rios is now one of the most advanced wastewater facilities in the Country,” said Jaime Rivera, Project Manager for RWRD.  Pima County now produces effluent that meets the highest possible classification standards and has an upgraded sewer system with enough capacity to meet the community’s needs for decades to come.

Arizona Forward is a public interest organization with members from the private sector, government jurisdictions, and education and non-profit communities focused on improving Arizona’s environment and quality of life.
