  • American Legion tourney set at Kino

    The American Legion will hold its state baseball tournament at Kino Sports Complex July 24-27.

    Baseball fieldThe tournament will feature eight teams in a double-elimination format. Three teams represent Tucson: Post 7 Tucson, Post 59, and the Northwest Red Raiders. The other teams are: Vista Grande High School, Casa Grande; Trevor G. Browne High School and Alhambra High School, Phoenix; César Chávez High School, Laveen; and Poston Butte High School, Sun Tan Valley.

    This is the first time that the Department of Arizona’s American Legion has brought their state tournament to the Kino Sports Complex, said organizer Bill Leith.

    Opening ceremonies will be conducted at 6 p.m. on July 24, featuring all eight teams and the Marine Corps League 007 Honor Guard representing Post 59. Play begins at 7 p.m. with four games on fields four, five, six and seven. Games continue at 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. on July 25 and 9 a.m. on July 26. The winners will meet in the championship game at 9 a.m. on July 27.

    “We’re excited to begin this relationship with the American Legion,” said Benny Young, director of the Pima County Stadium District. “Fans who come out for these games are going to be treated to some terrific baseball.” 

    Admission isw $5 per adult per day.  Those presenting military or American Legion membership ID along with one guest are free. Fans 17 and under also are free.
