Soccer playersSoccer teams from three states will converge on Kino Sports Complex April 10-12 for 289 soccer games to be played as part of the CDO Challenge Cup.

Organizers are expecting 177 teams to take part in the tournament, a 29 percent increase from the 2014 event. Six college coaches also are expected to attend to scout players, said Mike Kevershan, president of the CDO Soccer Club.

He expects the tournament to generate 500 room nights at area hotels, given that 22 teams will be traveling more than 200 miles to attend. One hundred local teams hailing from Tucson, Marana, Oro Valley, Vail and Sahuarita also will be playing.

Games get underway at 5 p.m. Friday and continue on Saturday from 7:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday from 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m.
The tournament also will feature special events and activities for fans such as juggling exhibitions by freestyle soccer players, a power shot contest and a vertical jump exhibition by members of Desert Speed School.

“The timing couldn’t be better for Kino,” said Chris Bartos, director of the Pima County Stadium District. “We are coming off an extremely busy baseball season. It’s great that our baseball resources are now available to serve the demand for this annual soccer tournament. It looks like a winning proposition for everyone.”

Check the CDO Challenge Cup website for the full tournament schedule and dates and time for each age group. Admission is free, and concessions will be available during the entire event. As a reminder, no outside food or drink will be permitted into the venue.
