Collecting greaseFriday, November 28, 2014 marked the tenth annual Day-After-Thanksgiving Grease Collection and Recycling event in Pima County. Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) staff, community volunteers, and representatives from RWRD’s partners EDGE Group, Grecycle, Pima Association of Governments and the Town of Sahuarita were out in force collecting used cooking grease and oils at five locations throughout the metropolitan Tucson area. The grease and oils collected at the event will be recycled into biodiesel, a cleaner burning fuel.

This year’s event took in 3,863 pounds of grease. Since the first event, in 2005, approximately 28,863 pounds of cooking grease have been collected and kept out of area sewers and landfills.

This community tradition will change slightly next season. Next season’s event will take place in January 2016. This change is based on a number of factors, including requests for a drop date that can accommodate oils and greases generated during both the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays. The specific date of the next event will be announced in 2015.
