The remodel of the Wilmot Library was completed in January of 2011. The primary purpose of the remodel was to provide the Wilmot Library with expanded space and technological infrastructure to enhance the Pima County Public Library System’s mission of supporting education, literacy, and lifelong learning throughout Pima County.

Since the Murphy-Wilmot Library re-opened in February, over 1,000 people visit the library each day. In addition to borrowing library materials, customers can be found using public access computers, studying in one of the two study rooms, attending community meetings or attending story times in the children’s meeting room. The renovation preserved the key elements of the original building which is considered to be one of the few examples of modern architecture in Tucson. The project was given an award from the Tucson-Pima County Historical Association.

The Wilmot Library was constructed in 1965 and is considered by many to be a seminal work by the renowned modernist architect Nicolas Sakellar. A primary goal of this project was to maintain and respect the integrity of the building’s design.
